GRANDMA BERNIE'S ORPHAN STEW

Put ham into large stewpot, cover with water, chicken stock and simmer til rest of meat falls off. Then add the potatoes, layer over the cabbage; continue to simmer til potatoes are soft and cabbage is clear/done. I wait til last few minutes to throw on green beans and liberally dose of black pepper. Cover and heat 5-10 more minutes. Stir through when ready to ladle out to serve. You may need to add more water to make more of a soup. Mom always served with freshly baked cornbread,too. And it’s even better the second day after the flavors have melded together.
